Synopsis from Wikipedia:

Seventeen-year-old Makoto Konno (Riisa Naka/Emily Hirst) lives with her family in the Shitamachi area of Tokyo, Japan. Makoto lives with her parents and younger sibling Miyuki (Yuki Sekido/Shannon Chan-Kent). Her aunt Kazuko Yoshiyama (Sachie Hara/Saffron Henderson), is an art restorer at the Tokyo National Museum. One day, when Makoto discovers a message written on a blackboard at her high school, she inadvertently falls upon a mysterious, walnut-shaped object. On her way home, Makoto is ejected into a railroad crossing when she loses control of her bicycle and is struck by a train. She is transported a few minutes back in time to before the accident. Kazuko explains to Makoto that she has the power to "time-leap", to literally leap through time. At first, Makoto uses her power extravagantly to avoid being late, to get perfect grades on tests, and even relive a single karaoke session for an entire hour, but Makoto soon discovers that her actions can adversely affect others.

Last night was not the first time I've watched this movie. It was actually the ninth or the tenth time. And I love it even more than the first time I've seen it. I've instantly loved every character in this movie, especially the main characters.. especially Makoto. She is a character that I can relate to so much. And I admire the characteristics that she has that I dont. Even though she became selfish and a bit defensive... she did learn her lesson. And that shows how realistic this movie is. The characters' feelings, reactions, decisions are very realistic.

Chiaki --- I was soooo shocked when I learned about his character twist, the first time I've watched this movie. My jaw, literally dropped open and I was stunned. I like that he had this little secret in him. Which made this suppose-to-be-super-fun movie into a heartbreaking one.

Chiaki, Makoto and Kosuke friendship.. it was ideal. I love their friendship so much. I like how they found comfort with each other even though Makoto is a girl, even though their personalities were a bit different. Kosuke is a guy who prioritizes studies and volunteer club, Chiaki who started off kind of an outcast and outgoing.  They are different...but there is something that connects them together. Their friendship was strengthen by time.
The events in this movie was pretty unpredictable and quite intense. When Makoto was still learning about the time leaping thing, it was funny and exciting. But when  she began to learn and understand it, it gets uneasy. I tend to get lost at some point at first, but now that I've watched it for like the tenth time, I understood the time frame thing.

Chiaki and Makoto. Ahh -- the possibility of them, falling in love. It's sad because I wanted more from them. I want to know what could have happened if they were together.  I like how Chiaki finds comfort in her. And Makoto, I like that she's unsure of how she feels about Chiaki, but admitted that she likes him eventually in the end. GUH! THE FEELS!
Indeed, the pain is there when Chiaki started going out with Makoto's friend. I understood that he ended up like that because Makoto's been ignoring him and messing with him by using her time travel thing. Which I think, Makoto regretted, big time in the end.

I love anything that has the theme of time travel. I find this movie fun and exciting but heartbreaking at the same time. The farewell scene between Chiaki and Makoto brought me to buckets of tears. It was indeed a sad ending. But I like my bittersweet endings because I know that it would last in my memory for a long long time.

There are still questions hanging in my mind. Will Chiaki and Makoto see each other again? Maybe? At some point in the future? But for sure, they're a totally different persons already, in terms of the age and their maturity level. I still have other questions that I don't even know how to ask. Do I need a sequel?? Maybe? or maybe not? I don't think it will happen anyway.

It's just ---- ALL THESE FEELS inside me,.!! Plus, the OST of this movie! love love it! It's Kawaranai Mono by Hanako Oku. Well, I enjoyed this movie so much! I want other people to enjoy this too. I highly recommend this to anyone. My rating:

  1. I must say that anime movies are absolutely great. There is so much to watch in this genre. I am fond of Anime as well as other movies/shows and always love to watch one or two on my home theatre on the weekends. This time my kids are joining me and that's why I have selected the shows by Andy Yeatman to make full use of our weekends.
